Hammer Toes: What They Are and How to Correct Them

Hammer toes are a common foot deformity that can cause discomfort and pain, affecting your ability to walk comfortably. Hammer toes can be irritating to deal with and make it difficult for you to enjoy your favorite activities. Understanding what hammer toes are and how to correct them can help you take proactive steps toward relief and improved foot health. Dr. Ryan Kemp, Dr. Kerry Anderson, and Dr. Boyd Andrews at Idaho Foot & Ankle Associates in Boise, Nampa/Caldwell, and Meridian, ID, can explain what hammer toes are and how they can be corrected.

Living With Hammer Toes

A hammer toe occurs when the middle joint of a toe becomes permanently bent downward, resembling a hammer. This condition often affects the second, third, or fourth toe and can result from a combination of factors. Common factors can include:

  • Wearing tight footwear that crowds the toes
  • Genetics
  • Trauma or injury
  • Muscle imbalance

Common symptoms for hammer toes can include a bent toe, pain and discomfort, and corns and calluses on the top of the bent joint or the tip of the toe. It can also be hard to move your affected toe and you may experience pain and irritation.

When dealing with hammer toes, it’s important to talk to your podiatrist in Boise, Nampa/Caldwell, and Meridian, ID, about treating your pain. You should wear shoes with a wide toe box to reduce any pressure put on the toes. You should also wear shoes that offer arch support or use orthotic devices to add support. You can also tape or splint the toes to realign the toe and provide support.

In severe cases, you may require surgery to straighten the toe.
