What to Do if You Have Flat Feet

Our professional podiatrists, Dr. Ryan Kemp, Dr. Kerry Anderson, and Dr. Boyd Andrews at Idaho Foot & Ankle Associates help patients suffering from podiatric conditions like flat feet in the Boise, Nampa, and Meridian, ID, areas.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flat feet or fallen arches are when the arch or middle of your foot rests on the ground when you are standing. You can check if you have flat feet by looking at the inner side of your foot.

Flat feet are considered normal in babies and young children and should usually disappear by the time they turn 3, but some children may have flat feet up until 6 years old. The arches start developing as they grow, and the muscles and tendons tighten.

There are two types of flat feet:

  • Flexible flat feet where the arch is visible when you lift the foot off the ground.
  • Rigid flat feet where there is no visible arch regardless of the position of the foot.

What Are the Causes of Flat Feet?

Flat feet are relatively common and may run in your family. You may also develop flat feet after a foot or ankle injury. Muscular diseases may cause flat feet, and it’s common in patients with Down Syndrome. Patients with diabetes or obesity may also be prone to developing this condition.

Often, flat feet shouldn’t be a cause for concern in themselves, but it’s a good idea to determine their underlying cause. Some patients have flat feet from childhood and never experience pain or adverse side effects. However, if you develop flat feet after previously having normal arches, or you start experiencing pain and problems with movement, then it is worthwhile coming to see one of our experienced podiatrists. Dr. Kemp, Dr. Anderson, and Dr. Andrews at Idaho Foot & Ankle Associates regularly assist patients with flat feet concerns in the Boise, Nampa, and Meridian, ID, areas.

How Do You Treat Flat Feet?

If you are experiencing symptoms like pain, swelling, and trouble wearing shoes with your fallen arches, then our expert team may recommend some of the following podiatric solutions:

  • Orthotic inserts to support your fallen arches.
  • Physical therapy to strengthen your foot muscles.
  • Lifestyle modifications
  • In severe cases, surgery may be recommended to correct your fallen arches
